This Fishing Method Is Wiping Out The Bluefin Tuna Population

No fish has inspired as much controversy over the past several years as the bluefin tuna. Sushi lovers, especially in Japan, love the fish's fatty flesh and pay top dollar for prize cuts -- but environmentalists say that the world's hunger for o-toro has pushed the three species of bluefin around the world to the brink of extinction. Global fisheries managers have carefully negotiated the demands of these two wildly divergent (and highly vocal) constituencies by placing strict limits on fishing of bluefin tuna, and enforcing those limits to the best of their abilities. Yet all their hard work is imperiled by two huge factors: illegal fishing and bycatch. Work has been done in recent years to...

Sustainable future out of sight for bigeye tuna in the Western Pacific (WWF - World Wildlife Fund)

(Source: WWF - World Wildlife Fund) Sustainable future out of sight for bigeye tuna in the Western Pacific Cairns, Australia: WWF is disappointed that the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCFPC) once again failed to take meaningful action against tuna overfishing and the overall excess of vessel capacity in the region, passing a watered down measure in effect only for 2014 and deferring action for future years. "It is heartbreaking to observe the various member states acknowledge the dire state in the fishery, but then take few meaningful steps to address the problem because of short term economic interests or other short-sighted reasons," said Bubba Cook, Tuna Programme...

A Small Victory for Whale Sharks

Whale sharks get some respect; the bigeye tuna, not so much. That was the gist of the message from the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, whose member nations agreed this week at a meeting in Manila to help reduce whale shark deaths in Pacific fisheries. The commission did not act on a recommendation from scientists that the catch of bigeye tuna be sharply reduced. Currently, Pacific fishing nations take in about 150,000 tons of bigeye, a sushi favorite, each year. Arguing that this number is unsustainable, scientists had called for a catch reduction of up to 30 percent. But the meeting ended Thursday with no change in the status quo, meaning that the overfishing will continue...

Remember Dolphin-Safe Tuna? Let's Make FAD-Free Tuna the Next Trend

Perhaps because the vast majority of the tuna Americans eat comes a precooked beige in cans, people seem to forget it's a fish. Jessica Simpson famously asked if "chicken of the sea" was chicken or fish. Well Jessica, tuna are fish -- and they're in big trouble. All that canned tuna we eat is having a negative effect not just on tuna species like albacore and skipjack, but also on center-of-the-plate "fancy" tuna. At a recent meeting of the international management body, the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, the WCPFC's Scientific Committee announced that bigeye tuna are now officially overfished (as bluefin tuna already are). Bigeye tuna, also known as ahi, are prized for...

WWF: Bigeye tuna measures disappointing Manila, Philippines: WWF deplores that tuna managers once again are deferring meaningful action on bigeye tuna conservation by denying effective management measures adopted at the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCFPC) meeting closing today, ultimately risking the long term security of the region's people. While the commission made positive progress on conservation measures for seabirds, whale sharks, and satellite monitoring of fishing vessels, it failed to address two of the central species it is charged with managing, bigeye and albacore tuna. "It was business as usual at the commission meeting, with the delegates from the 32 member...
